Event Description
Calling all members! Help AAUW recognize Black History Month by joining us for a talk with 2005–06 AAUW American Fellow and University of Michigan associate professor Sherie M. Randolph, Ph.D., about her new book, Florynce ‘Flo’ Kennedy: The Life of a Black Feminist Radical. The work is a biography of “a super badass and wildly underrated woman known for her dazzling sense of style and sharp wit.”
In what is the first biography of Kennedy, Randolph traces the life and political influence of this vibrant leader of the Black Power and feminist movements. Randolph narrates Kennedy’s long activist career, including her founding roles in organizations such as the National Black Feminist Organization and the National Organization for Women. Using an extensive and previously uncollected archive, Randolph demonstrates profound connections within the histories of the new left, civil rights, Black Power, and feminism, showing that black feminism was pivotal in shaping postwar U.S. liberation movements.

Professor Sherie Randolph spoke with spoke with author Gloria Steinem and Professor Nikol Alexander-Floyd at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture about her book Florynce “Flo” Kennedy: The Life of a Black Feminist Radical. Watch the video on CSPAN.

About ¡Adelante! Book of the Month Club
Female authors are much less likely than male authors to have their books reviewed in major publications like the New York Times and Harper’s Magazine. That’s why we created the ¡Adelante! Book of the Month Club: to spotlight engrossing stories and writing by women from all backgrounds. We also connect our members to some of the authors we feature through web discussions. Stay in the know about upcoming ¡Adelante! events, or create your own book club.
