1956 Letter by Marine Biologist Rachel Carson

This letter was discovered by a member of the AAUW Archives Corps while routinely processing documents. It was written on June 12, 1956, by Rachel Carson, AAUW Achievement Award recipient, to Mary Boyette, AAUW public information officer. In the letter, Rachel Carson states she will use the award to write her new book. After looking at a chronology of her work, it was determined that her next book was Silent Spring, published in 1962, a groundbreaking work which linked the use of pesticides to the decline of the bird population. This discovery of this letter sheds new light on how the AAUW Achievement Award was used by Rachel Carson and how it contributed to such an important book that is credited with starting the modern environmental movement.
