Call for Applicants: AAUW National Student Advisory Council

Passionate about women’s equity?! AAUW is looking for 10 students with leadership experience — and potential — to serve on the prestigious National Student Advisory Council (SAC) for the 2017–18 academic year. SAC members have the unique opportunity to advise one of the nation’s leading women’s organizations while taking action around important policy issues on their campuses. Responsibilities of SAC Members

Selection Criteria

Applicants must attend a two- or four-year accredited institution in the United States for both semesters of the academic year. Special consideration will be given to students from institutions that are AAUW college/university members or who belong to an AAUW student organization.

Applicants must be available to fulfill the outlined responsibilities and should demonstrate strong communication and writing skills in their application. SAC applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  1. Leadership potential. The student demonstrates a commitment to their leadership growth and community engagement.
  2. Campus impact. The student suggests creative and innovative ways to recruit and engage other students around AAUW issues. The student will actively promote AAUW and NCCWSL on campus and in the local community.
  3. Perspective and voice. The student brings a unique perspective, background, and experience to the SAC. The student also demonstrates intentionality about promoting diversity and making their work accessible for all students and community members.
  4. Commitment to gender equity. The student demonstrates a commitment to women’s leadership and gender equity through past or current coursework, internships, jobs, volunteer activities, or involvement with relevant organizations.

Important Dates

  • September 25, 2017: Application materials due by 11:59 p.m. PDT.
  • November 3–5, 2017: SAC members attend a required three-day retreat in Washington, D.C. (Expenses covered by AAUW)
  • Summer 2018, exact date to be announced: SAC members attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL) in College Park, Maryland. (Expenses covered by AAUW)

Application Submission

In order for an application to be considered, the following items must be submitted to AAUW by 11:59 p.m. PDT on Monday, September 25, 2017:

  • A completed online application form.

  • A one-page letter of recommendation written by a former adviser, professor, or professional supervisor sent to Please have recommender include your full name in the letter and in the email subject line.

When sending your materials, you must state your name and “SAC Application Materials” in the subject line. Any application materials received after the deadline will not be considered.
